Sony Corporation, through its Personal Entertainment (audio) division, has teamed up with New York University’s Steinhardt School to launch the Sony Audio Institute, a first-of-its-kind academic initiative fusing music, technology, and business.

Announced in New York City on March 12, the Institute will foster innovation at the intersection of audio technology and education, preparing the next generation of creators and engineers.

Esteemed NYU educator Larry S. Miller – a music industry veteran and 2024 Music Business Educator of the Year – has been appointed as the inaugural director.

The Sony Audio Institute is established with an initial 10-year term and will serve as an interdisciplinary hub on NYU’s campus.

It formally brings together Sony’s expertise in professional and consumer audio (from its headphones and 360 Reality Audio technology to recording gear) with NYU Steinhardt’s renowned programs in Music Business and Music Technology.

Students will gain hands-on access to Sony’s latest innovations – for example, the curriculum will incorporate Sony’s 360 Reality Audio immersive sound and the 360 Virtual Mixing Environment, enabling headphone-based mixing that simulates a studio control room.

The goal is to enhance classroom learning with cutting-edge tools and to spur joint research in areas like spatial audio, machine listening, and music cognition.

Officials from both institutions celebrated the partnership. “It is an honor to establish this collaboration with one of the world’s premier music schools,” said Sony CEO Kimio Maki, noting that inspiring the next generation of music creators aligns with Sony’s vision.

NYU President Linda G. Mills praised the “forward-looking initiative” for giving students “a competitive advantage in a rapidly changing industry” through scholarships, internships, and research fellowships.

The Institute will also outfit a state-of-the-art “Sony Audio Institute Studio” on NYU’s Brooklyn campus and support student-driven showcases bridging academia and the music industry.

“I am honored and excited to be leading this innovative new Institute,” said director Larry Miller, adding that it will provide “multitudes of opportunities” for students to shape the future of music and audio technology.

By integrating Sony’s latest audio tech into the curriculum and collaborative projects, the Sony Audio Institute aims to become a launchpad for breakthroughs in sound – from new music creation tools to advances in how audiences experience audio.

The partnership underscores how academia and industry can join forces to drive the next era of innovation in audio.
